PORTA PALAZZO

New Discoveries: A New Turin

Day 1:

Arrival in Turin in the morning, meeting with the guide and visit of the most historic district of the city, the “Roman Quarter,” the area where the ancient Roman settlement once stood. Until recently, this area was considered one of the most degraded in the city, but following a major redevelopment, it has transformed into a vibrant and picturesque area, with its ancient buildings, cobbled streets, narrow alleys, and characteristic local spots, almost reminiscent of the Latin Quarter in Paris. The next stop will be the popular Porta Palazzo area, known for its colorful and vibrant market, one of the largest and open-air in Europe! Free lunch.

There are many dining options in this part of the city, like the new “Mercato Centrale,” a five-story building (two of which are underground) that develops around a large central agora with 19th-century icehouses, formerly used as refrigerated warehouses for food preservation. Porta Palazzo undoubtedly represents the most multicultural and ethnically diverse side of the city, historically a place of welcome and gathering. It’s certainly one of the most “authentic” places to visit in Turin! Hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 2:

Breakfast at the hotel. Panoramic bus tour to explore the hills of Turin, starting from Piazza Vittorio, the Gran Madre church, the Po riverbank, and the 25 Verde building, a true “habitable forest” in the heart of Turin. The steel structures resemble trees, with their mighty trunks and branches, which reach balconies, windows, and terraces. Strolls through the historic Valentino Park and the medieval village allow us to remember the creative, ecological, and surprising works of the gardener Rodolfo Marasciuolo. Visit the Villa della Regina, a splendid 17th-century villa that was home to many Savoy queens for centuries, starting with Ludovica, the wife of Maurice of Savoy. It is named after its illustrious residents. Adjacent to the villa is the garden and vineyard, the only example of an urban vineyard in Turin. Stop at a local venue in Piazza Vittorio for a “vermouth experience” (optional – for those who prefer, free lunch).

Extra Vermouth is not just a tasting; it’s a ritual, a unique experience. It’s both a gastronomic pleasure and an educational opportunity to discover the flavored wine that appeared at the end of the 1700s at the Savoy court and in the shops of Turin’s liquorists. Alongside the authentic Vermouth di Torino, typical local products and Piedmontese cuisine will be served, with five tastings, including one sweet, as per the historical tradition.

At the end of the tour, transfer by bus to the Lingotto area, home to one of the main production of the FIAT automobile factory, now converted into a large multifunctional center. Today, the various floors house shops, restaurants, concert halls, and even a theater, along with cultural attractions such as the Pinacoteca Agnelli. Ride up the Pista500, the iconic FIAT test track on the roof of the Lingotto, now hosting environmental installations, light and sound works, expanded cinema projects, and sculptures interacting with the building’s architecture. The Lingotto area also includes Eataly, Green Pea, and the Mauto, the Museum of the Automobile.
